Day 5 - Hvar Island

Today we took a ferry boat and visited the island of Hvar (pronounced xv̞âːr) and also visited the town of Hvar.

Hvar is in the Adriatic Sea, located off the Dalmatian coast, lying between the islands of Brač, Vis and Korčula. Approximately 68 km (42.25 mi) long, with a high east-west ridge of Mesozoic limestone and dolomite, the island of Hvar is unusual in the area for having a large fertile coastal plain, and fresh water springs. Its hillsides are covered in pine forests, with vineyards, olive groves, fruit orchards and lavender fields in the agricultural areas. The island has 11,103 residents, making it the 4th most populated of the Croatian islands (after Krk, Korcula and Brac, the two latter ones we will see tomorrow and day after).

As we left hotel clouds were low and we thought we may get rained on during day. As it turned out sun actually came out and another day where we side skirted the rain.

Ferry ride was 2 hours long and we stayed on the island about 5 hours. We had lunch at the marina in town of Hvar, walked the streets and also rode the bike on the island.

The car ferry stops at Stari Gard and the ride from there to Havr although only 15 Kms is magnificent. Unique terrain that I had never seen before. The combination of the sea views, mountains and special flora of he island is extraordinary.
